Retrieval practice means actively pulling knowledge from memory instead of just rereading or reviewing it. The effect is one of the best-documented in all of learning research: people who quiz themselves retain content significantly longer than people who simply read the same material a second time. For employee training, that means concretely: a short question after reading often does more than a second pass through the content.

Rereading feels productive because the text feels more familiar the second time around. That's exactly the trap: familiarity with a text is easily mistaken for actual understanding.   • Repeated recall beats one-off recall. A single recall moment already helps, but the effect becomes significantly stronger when the same content is quizzed again after a few days, not just once right after reading.
