Varied Practice

Practicing a single concept or skill across multiple different examples and application contexts, so learners extract the underlying principle rather than memorizing one specific instance — improving the ability to transfer that principle to novel situations.

Varied practice means practicing one and the same skill across several different examples, instead of repeating the same situation over and over. The goal is for learners to recognize the underlying principle, rather than memorizing just one concrete instance of it.

#A concrete example

A training on constructive feedback has learners practice the same feedback structure across four different cases: an employee who repeatedly misses deadlines, a colleague who dominates meetings, a team member whose quality is slipping despite high effort, and someone who reacts defensively to criticism. If the same case were instead practiced four times with only minor variations, learners would more likely remember that one example rather than the general principle behind it, namely naming the specific behavior, explaining its impact, and jointly developing a solution.

#The difference from interleaving

Varied practice is often confused with interleaving, but the two mean different things. Interleaving mixes different topics or skills within a single practice session so learners learn to discriminate between them. Varied practice stays with a single skill or principle, but varies the surface, meaning the concrete context in which it's practiced. The two can be combined, but they work independently of each other.

The most common mistake in practice design is repeating a principle multiple times but always within the same case study, with only slightly changed numbers or names. That builds familiarity with the one case, not understanding of the principle. Three to four clearly different examples are usually enough to make the difference noticeable.
