Step-by-step demonstrations of how to solve a problem, shown before learners attempt one themselves — a technique that reduces cognitive load for novices and supports schema acquisition, especially for complex or unfamiliar procedures.

A worked example shows a complete solution step by step before learners attempt a similar task on their own. Instead of "here is the problem, solve it," the message is "here is how an expert solves this problem, now try a similar one." The technique traces back to John Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory and is one of the most thoroughly studied instructional design techniques in existence.

#A concrete example from practice

When onboarding a new hire to a CRM system, a manager first demonstrates on screen, step by step, how to correctly create a new lead, categorize it, and assign it to a sales rep, explaining the reasoning behind each click. Only afterward does the new employee handle a similar, but not identical, case on their own. The difference from "just let them try it": the cognitive capacity that would otherwise go into trial and error is instead available for understanding the process itself.

#What the research shows

A meta-analysis of worked examples in mathematics education, covering 55 studies and 181 effects, found a moderate advantage over less guided learning formats (effect size g = 0.48). The effect was larger for correct, complete examples than for flawed or incomplete ones. A refinement of the technique, called subgoal labeling, further breaks an example into named sub-steps, such as "Step 1: verify the lead source" instead of one continuous sequence without intermediate headers. Studies in introductory programming courses show that subgoal labels are associated with lower dropout rates.

Worked examples work best for novices and complex, unfamiliar material. For more advanced learners, the effect can partially reverse, a well-documented phenomenon called the expertise reversal effect: someone who already knows a procedure benefits more from independent practice than from another demonstration.
